French-born hairdresser, Emmanuel, is an up-and-coming talented stylist based in London. The Avant-Garde hairdresser of the year previously lived in France and talks to us how he transitioned from knowing nothing of the industry to become an award-winning hairdresser.
Emmanuel, describe your personal style, and what type of hairdresser are you? I guess l can say that my style is creative. l try to push the boundaries and always try to find new textures.
Did you ever think you would be where you are today? Can you give us an inside scoop of your professional career? Not at all. l never learned English in my life and l started hairdressing following an advice without knowing anything about the industry. So I would never believe to be an award winner hairstylist, in England!
Having lived in France, what differences have you found compared to the hair industry in the UK? I guess French people are a bit more classic. Here in the UK, everybody is more extravagant, so it gives us a bit more opportunities to be creative. Also, the training is different. In France, hairdressers have to be registered and I think in England this has to be the same for the industry to be recognized.
How and what inspired the name of your collections. How did you decide on the name? I recently got inspired by the songs’ names, and I try, in my collections to give the same feeling that I got by listening to the songs.
Your portfolio on Instagram is amazing, and mind-blowing. What inspires your creations, How is this development perfected? I got inspired by everything really. It’s all about research and hard work and trying and trying until you found what you wanted to create.
Being a finalist and winning an award is amazing…Describe the moment you found out you were the winner of a hairdressing award? It’s difficult to describe but I guess it’s more happiness of the hard work paying off.
Who is the first person you call when you have been chosen and/or been placed as a nominee or won a hair award? My family, I guess, but there are not in the industry so it’s not easy for them to understand even if they are proud. But I’m sharing mainly my successes with a good friend based in Paris. He is as passionate as I am.
What/Who do you think has been the main attribution towards your success? Probably the education I received from my parents. I didn’t get the chance to have somebody who took me under his/her wing as a mentor would do.
What do you consider to be the main difference between yourself and other hairstylists in your field? Probably the passion and hard work.
Did you know from the beginning that you wanted to specialize in technical work? I didn’t. It’s why I’ve trained as a stylist and colorist, to have an all over the idea about what could be my choice.
Social media is used by hairdressers to showcase their work. How important is social media for growing the business and what platform is mostly used by you? It is important but I’ve taken a step back from social media as soon as I realized that a lot of people are buying fake followers and fake likes in order to have a social recognition, but after you realize that they are not what they pretend to be!
Who would be your ideal person to style or give a complete change and why? Also, who is your mentor? A person who trusts me and can share ideas.
What line of colors and hair products do you use, and what is your favorite? I’m using Revlon as they been supporting me since I’ve started competitions. But I have a few other favorite products too.
If you could drop everything and do only one thing, what would you do? Look after my family.
What is the first thing you think about when going to work? Check what l have to do and get prepared for a busy day.
